Shri Tukaram Charitam I Vol III Book VIII Chp 8 Shlokas 22 - 25
तद्दृष्ट्वा पण्डिताः केचिदसूयाबाधिताशयाः |
निन्दाञ्चक्रुर्महात्मानं तुकाराम हरिप्रियम् |
अयं वैष्यकुलोत्पन्नः शास्त्रगन्धविवर्जितः |
स्वयं विधाय गीतानि गायत्येवं स्वतन्त्रतः ||
सर्वशास्त्रविरुद्धानि गीतान्येतानि पामराः |
आकर्ण्य तं पूजन्यन्ति तुकारमं सुदुर्मतिम् ||
एवं सञ्चल्पितं श्रुत्वा पण्डितैस्तैर्यदृच्छया |
हरिदासस्तुकारामो नितरां दुःखितोsभवत् ||
Some scholars became envious of Tukaram’s fame. Hence, they started spreading scandals about Tukaram, the mahatma and the devotee of Lord Hari. This man having born in the vaishyl clan and having absolutely no knowledge of the Shastras is composing songs on his own and is singing them. The ignorant people listen to these songs that go against the Shastras and appreciate the malicious Tukaram. When Tukaram, the devotee of Shri Hari happened to listen ti th=se abuses unexpectedly, he was hurt deeply.
